before you get started, if you have recently made a resolve to make healthier food choices, I highly recommend you read the following post. It will help you orient in the right direction. There is no blog post, book or preacher that can convince any of us intelligent beings into doing something we do not truly believe in. Find your own Why's on why you want to make a change and What's will be relatively easy. Post below is a 'What' and 'How' - a starting point for a utopian day as it relates to food. You can follow it 90% or 1% or not at all - that's up-to you.
What's important is to understand the core concepts of how food relates to our physical health which is minimum bar requirement for great mental and spiritual health. You don't have to be religious but think about the most beautiful temple, church, a Bahai temple, Monastery or any other place of worship you have been to anywhere in the world. Was it clean, in great shape, maintained like a true residence for God by devotees working day and night? You bet it was. We are either a part of universal energy that created everything or a creation of and we live in the temple of human body. How should we take care of it? Or should we at all? If you believe in the beauty of our spiritual existence in body being the temple - you will make some attempts to keep it as perfect shape as possible.
Let's review the dictionary definition of food : "any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink, or that plants absorb, in order to maintain life and growth". The word to pay attention to is 'nutritious' if it was not obvious. Now don't go running to the substance you were thinking of consuming and start reading the nutrition label to establish how nutritious your food is. Consider the following activities
1. A walk in the crisp morning air of the mountains you love
2. A fresh strawberry from your local farm who use 100% organic compost and zero pesticides
3. Smell of fresh Sauerkraut in a Batavian village in Germany
4. A sip of coconut water from a 'Coconut' in a tropical destination of your choice
We can go on and on but none of the above and a million other similar actions come with a nutrition label. Because nature at it's best does not need a label. It just is - pure, pristine and waiting for us to get assimilated with it and in it. It's a similar difference as in being spiritual and merely carrying out religious practices in the hope for salvation. Being spiritual is easy - that is our natural state. Being religious needs a lot of study, you have to answer some very basic questions like - what is the right religion for my beliefs? Do they pray to my God (or the million forms) that my family or community already believes in? Do the people who follow this religion (or a look alike) speak my language? Does the religion promote my way of eating (vegetarian, meat, etc.)?. In other words, can the religion validate my past, my current and potentially my future where I have make the least modifications to practical life and still feel good about being a person of faith. Staunch religion or a look alike needs a nutrition label, being spiritual does not. Enough of the adventurous detour but I always find it fascinating how people undermine the power of food based on their religious beliefs and cultural biases.
Relation of Immune system to our Gut: Our immune system is responsible for sustained good health and fighting off diseases before they occur and defeating disease when it does find it's way in. Because our gut controls 80% of our immune system function, it behooves us to learn how we can keep the gut healthy which in turn will boost our immunity.
When food we consume makes it the processing facility - Gut - in our body, it can either provide the much needed nutrition to our immune system and other vital organs in our body or reasons to fight the unintended toxins we are introducing. I will cover top 7 toxins in a different post. For now, let's look at the Top 7 foods we can include in our daily diets to help boost our immunity and let our bodies what they are naturally built to do - heal. Hippocrates knew this more than 2000 years ago. Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic cultures also had deep knowledge of our true physiological and meta-physical health. One of Hippocrates' quote I really like is 'Let your food be your medicine. Let your medicine be your food'
But why the emphasis on food? Why not money, relationships, spirituality, religion, social aspects of our life? All these other aspects are important and constitute our being and sense of existence. We can also talk about food all day long and make a list of 20 'i should' items we will never get to OR take a intentional decision to make a positive change in one of the most important aspects of our physical life. What's interesting is that if we are able to master our mind to make the right decisions for one aspect of our existence, it positively impacts all other aspects as well. If you resolve to run or bike at 5 AM on Sunday mornings with your friends, you will have to duck out early from the party night before, drink less or no alcohol. If you like the adrenaline rush you get in the activity you have chosen, you will also figure out small steps you can take throughout the week to help you perform slightly better than your current state. What starts out as a benign physical exercise will soon transform your life in ways you have never imagined if you make it a 'must' for your existence. We all know the should's, could's, can's but until the should's, could's, can's becomes a must we never do it. You can start with a physical activity, spiritual activity of your choice and at some point in your journey to your goal you will have to take control of your food choices. Think about this -
1/ How likely are you to follow a spiritual leader who eats endlessly at every opportunity?
2/ How likely are you to spend money with a personal trainer who weighs 400 pounds+ for weight training sessions?
3/ How likely are you to learn Yoga from a yoga instructor who cannot perform a single Yoga pose?
We can think of a ton more scenarios, but the point is that all these examples have one thing in common - their in-ability to control their mind so they can make better food choices and live up-to the same beliefs they are attempting to teach their customers and/or followers.
Food is special. Average human being makes ~ 200 food decisions every day. Some of the best memories we have since we were born are related to food. We are what we eat. Food is also one of the easiest practical aspects of our lives that can control our physical destiny for starters. Also remember, everything that we consume via all our senses is food - taste, sight, touch, smell and hear. Even our thoughts are food for the mind and soul.
Note - Organic, Non GMO sourcing for ingredients is a given unless there is no alternative and/or it's a rare herb only grown in pristine Himalayas, Amazon etc.
lukewarm water with 1 tsp of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and fresh squeezed lemon juice. 2-3 tsp / 16 oz. glass is plenty
Why? Body can either be acidic or alkaline. ideal PH value for our body is above 7/8. Lemons alkaline our bodies almost instantly. What better way to start the day than by alkalizing it with nature's best alkalizer - lemon. Apple cider Vinegar has live probiotics, they help our microbiome stay healthy and nourish it with the ability to fight any infections and bolster our immunity. lemon combined with Apple cider vinegar is a very potent combination that helps our body fight seasonal allergies along with equipping it with the combat weapons for other toxins that we intentionally or unintentionally introduce in our bodies.
Tip - Squeeze 2-3 Organic lemons and store the juice in fridge to last 2-3 days max.
a. Do not - start off the day with drinks that contain processed sugar and cream (excess dairy). Processed sugar and excess is #1 cause of inflammation. Inflammation creates ideal conditions for disease spread and eventually the breeding ground for auto immune conditions like cancer.
b. Hot black, green tea is ok. black coffee in moderation ( 1 cup) is ok too. Stay away from too much caffeine if you love your Adrenals. If you do not know what Adrenals are - these are small glands on top of your kidneys that produce cortisol like hormones. For now, just know they are very important for good health and we love them for what they do.
Body can become acidic just by unpleasant thoughts, irritation, frustration or anger. Food is the easiest way to increase alkalinity but be aware of your own reactions to events that create acidity in the body. Our happiness is not determined by what happens to us, it is determined by how we react to it.
Herbal tea
Why? This tea contains a very good balance of infection fighting natural herbs, immune system strengthening minerals and food groups that help fight seasonal allergies
I know you must be thinking we haven't eaten anything yet and breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But we have. We have broken the fast with lemon water followed by natures cleanser and rejuvenator herbal tea. Let's get some greens in with an overload of live enzymes, magnesium and other critical minerals, anti-oxidants, parasite fighting, anti-inflammatory and cruciferous vegetables. Here is a very good smoothie recipe. Use it as a baseline and add/remove additional vegetables to it. Go light on fruits. They are good but also have sugar, treat fruits as candy for that 3 PM afternoon slump
broccoli – 2 flowers
celery – half of a single stem
green apple – 1
lemon – 1
greens – handful or as much as you can stuff in blender
cucumber – ¼
dried figs – 2
Water (purified with no chlorine, flouride and other chemicals) – enough so ingredients are under water and give the blender enough room to churn/blend
Here's the easiest super grains porridge you can create many variations from:
1 cup quinoa
1 cup buckwheat
1 cup oats - steel cut or whole
1 cup mix veg
1 cup chopped ginger, turmeric, garlic and onion
2 cloves
2 cardamom
3-4 black peppers
1 tsp salt or to taste
2 green chillies chopped or to taste
Combine all ingredients and put them in a pressure cooker or equivalent
Add enough water to soak the ingredients at least
Put on high flame on Gas stove and wait for one cooker whistle
Let the steam escape and give it 5-10 minutes before opening
Serve it with a rich natural probiotic like Sauerkraut, Home-made Yogurt made out of whole non-homogenized grass-fed milk, Kimchi or homemade pickles which have been fermented for few weeks/months
if you can skip dairy all-together, nothing like it. If not, home made yogurt is ok. We will not get into whys and why not's of dairy here but for the sake of a brief explanation just know that yogurt along with pickles, sauerkraut are phenomenal sources of probiotics. If you can get it from a non-animal source like Sauerkraut, go for it. You do not have to be from Germany to make SauerKraut. Use your favorite search engine and find a simple SauerKraut recipe - it takes less than 15 minutes total and all you need is a good organic cabbage and salt.
This is slump time. You have been working whole day long and body has taken a toll. You were probably well behaved whole day but now cravings are starting to kick in and that chilled bottle of soda, beer with some spicy deep fried snacks seems like the only thing better than true salvation. You have been without food for ~ 3 hours now. System is longing for more things to process. Give it what it really needs with a potent shot of probiotic. There are many options, one of the simplest one is (again)
2 tsp of Apple cider vinegar mixed in half a glass of water with a tsp of lemon
Yes I know. Cider drink will not cut it. Follow-up with something which can hold you till dinner time but serve your nutritional needs. Something like this -
Mixed Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans, Raisins, Apricots, Pumpkin seeds. High in protein, good fats and just enough natural sugar with relatively lower Glycemic index to satiate your cravings while providing your body with the nutrition it truly deserves
Wait where are the berries? one of the richest sources of anti-oxidants. And this is also a great time to give yourself a boost of richest antioxidant in the world - Cacao.
1. Cacao nibs or powder .. 1 Tbsp. Did you know Cacao is the richest anti-oxidant on the earth. Please do not reach for that chocolate in your fridge or pantry - it has sugar, dairy and probably many other ingredients that have nothing to do with anti-oxidants. Infact sugar is the # 1 source of inflammation in our bodies
2. Blueberries – 2 Cups
3. Cranberries – 2 Cups. If it's not cranberry season, skip it. Organic Capsules are sort of ok too, but nothing in a capsule is a substitute. Stay away from it if you can find other ingredients and stock up on Thanksgiving for cranberries.
4. Dried figs – 2
5. Strawberries - 3-4
6. Pineapple - 1 cup 7. Cherries - 1 cup
8. Yogurt or Kefir with active cultures – 2 Cups. This is optional. Dairy in general is controversial (refer to China study, Fork over Knives), the only exception I make is home made yogurt made out of Organic, Non-GMO 100% Grass fed milk. This is primarily due to it's richness in probiotics which are absolute rock stars for our microbiom (The Gut). And why is the Gut important again? Well, it controls 80% of our immune system. .. . it's sort of important.
9. Water – enough to allow ingredients to blend. If you have a sore throat or cough, cold - boil the water before you add it to make the smoothie lukewarm
If you are getting your kids used to the taste, add 1-2 more Figs or Dates to make it sweet. Over time, reduce the qty. as the smoothie is very sugar heavy to begin with.
Remember, it not important to get everything. it is important to start. Winning starts with beginning and this is an important beginning towards great health for you and your family.
Salad with as many colored vegetables as you can possibly introduce. You cannot get enough probiotics so add a rich and slightly different source again like Balsamic Vinaigrette, if you had Sauer Kraut in AM, add Kimchi instead. This is also a great opportunity to add some of the other superfoods on your salad for toppings
Chia seeds
Flax seeds
Hemp seeds
Beet root
Pine nuts
Sesame seeds
Binge watching still in the system and need a drink in hand. Remember that tea concentrate you made, get a diluted warm herbal tea in your hand. Trust me, it is more about having something in your hand to sip than a stimulant like alcohol or a late night coffee with boatloads of sugar and creams which creates havoc on the gut right when it is about to slow down for the day
After you blend all ingredients, if the end result is too thick, just add more water. Don’t go with the cheap $50 blender, they don’t puree ingredients finely enough and it becomes very hard to chew/swallow the end product.
Blender type – something like a Vitamix or equivalent. A high powered blender that is. You can juice the above too with 2-3X the qty for all ingredients barring lemon, but there’s a ton of waste in juicing with not a proportional health benefit, blending is way quicker, includes fiber, results in low $ investment and is much more sustainable in our hectic routines
You will
For starters just do it for 3 days strict starting a Friday.
Then do it for another 4 and so on … in a few months, you’ll be hooked even more when you see the un-documented fringe benefits and positive by-products.

Things to remember and tips
For smoothies
After you blend all ingredients, if the end result is too thick, just add more water. Don’t go with the cheap $50 blender, they don’t puree ingredients finely enough and it becomes very hard to chew/swallow the end product.
Things to avoid
1. Sugar: it is # 1 cause of inflammation. Not only white sugar but really all forms of sugar – almost anything that is processed and white – white bread, white rice, white sugar, white pitas, anything that is labelled fat-free – usually fat-free items are high in sugar, processed cereal, too much alcoholEquipment you need
Too much to absorb? if you just did these 4 everyday:
- Wake up to warm water and couple spoons of lemon juice + Apple cider vinegar
- Follow-on with the herbal tea throughout the day instead of coffee, tea with sugar etc. Add a spoon of honey to morning tea for a kick but not throughout the day or it will be too much sugar
- Follow-on with at least 2 times smoothies – green once and berries second. If you can fit in one more on weekends, make that the green one
- Find a way to ground yourself (walk bare feet on grass) for at least 15 minutes while on a conference call etc.
You will
- Increase you pH value to where it needs to be . 7+ (7+ is alkaline which is good). Alkaline body prevents disease and fights disease quickly
- Eliminate free radicals. They are bad, like gunk in car engine
- Reduce inflammation which is the primary cause of cancer and other auto-immune conditions, pain, nerve damage and inhibitor to speedy recovery
- Teach your kids, friends and family one more life-skill in addition to the plenty you already coach them on
For starters just do it for 3 days strict starting a Friday.
Then do it for another 4 and so on … in a few months, you’ll be hooked even more when you see the un-documented fringe benefits and positive by-products.
